The next phase of network transformation is powered by 5G and is facilitating a rapid transition to cloud-native technologies. In order to speed up the implementation of 5G and edge network technologies, Google Cloud is partnering with Intel to develop optimized networks for communications service providers (CSPs).
Intel has been a major player in the data centre hardware space but is now ready to expand that achievement to the edge. This is a potentially huge market because it requires the creation of thousands of smaller data centres spread all over the world, reducing the physical gap between the cloud and base stations, thus reducing mobile latency. Google seems to be a perfect collaborator to assist Intel in this search.

In a blog post, Shailesh Shukla, Google Cloud Vice President and General Manager, Networking, stated Google Cloud will work collaboratively with Intel in three main areas: accelerating the ability of CSPs to deploy virtualized RAN (vRAN) and Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) solutions via infrastructure and hardware, a new network functionality lab validation environment, and simplifying the delivery of the business application.
With the industry’s shift to 5G and development in edge services, vRAN will bring major benefits for operators, including increased network capacity and spectral efficiency, cost efficiencies, and flexible implementation models. At the same time, these technologies present demanding network, timing, and processing specifications to communications service providers. To allow 5G vRAN deployments on a scale, the ability to deploy, manage, and update network functions is essential.
In addition to network functions, Google Cloud will partner with Intel to create edge technologies with Intel compute-optimized technology so as to make it even easier for communications service providers to deliver applications to the edge. In key sectors, such as manufacturing or retail, Google Cloud is also working closely with Intel to build blueprints and solutions to speed up edge transformation.
